INNOVATION CAMP: Hydrogen and electric powertrains
A platform for manufacturers to showcase their sustainable developments, the Innovation Camp of the Goodyear FIA ETRC at the Nürburgring displayed heavy goods vehicles from all different technologies.
Featuring the Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell, it was the first time in 2022, a hydrogen powered truck was on display for visitors and fans to see in the paddock.
Hyundai launched the first fuel cell powered commercial vehicle in 2019, following their success with the technology in road cars, and the company firmly believes in the future of hydrogen.
“At Hyundai we have used fuel cells for the past 20 years. Four years ago we decided to put the fuel cell, which we have successfully used in our passenger cars into the truck, and we realised this is the solution for the future,” said Beat Hirschi, CEO of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility AG.
As one of the very first truck brands in the world, Volvo Trucks started serial production of electric trucks in 2019, and has since extended their electric fleet to suit different transportation needs.
“The demand for greener vehicles has certainly increased over the past few years, as companies are becoming more and more aware of their responsibilities,” says Michael Brenner, Managing Director of Jungbluth Nutzfahrzeuge Vertriebs GmbH, a local dealership for the Volvo FE electric in Germany.
However he thinks, that a lack of knowledge about which alternative solutions are currently available on the market and the lack of charging infrastructure might prevent many companies from switching their fleet to alternatively powered vehicles.
