Chrome class mid-season review

As we reach the midpoint of the Goodyear FIA European Truck Racing Championship, the Chrome class has delivered a thrilling series of races, filled with intense battles, unexpected challenges and standout performances.

1. José Eduardo Rodrigues - 189 points

Reigning class champion José Eduardo Rodrigues has been a dominant force this season in the Chrome class.  His consistency, highlighted by a grand slam at Slovakia Ring and commanding performances wining three of the four races at the Nürburgring, has placed him firmly at the top of the standings. Despite a few setbacks, such as the engine failure at Zolder, Rodrigues has showcased resilience and race craft as well as strong overall finishes, which sets him up as the man to beat as the season progresses.

2. Steffen Faas - 158 points

Steffen Faas has been a consistent presence at the front of the Chrome class. After a strong start at Misano, Faas faced a challenging weekend at the Slovakia Ring, which hampered his performance. However, he bounced back with solid performances at Zolder and Nürburgring, securing valuable points and podium finishes. The German remains within striking distance of Rodrigues, though he will need to maintain his momentum and consistency to close the gap further.

3. Mark Taylor -142 points

The British racer has shown remarkable resilience and consistency, maintaining a strong third place in the standings. Despite some tough races, Taylor's persistence has paid off, particularly at Zolder and Nürburgring, where his multiple podium finishes helped close the gap to Faas. Taylor's solid performances and race craft have earned him a strong third place and he remains a key contender for the top spots.

4. John Newell - 114 points

John Newell's season has been a mix of highs and lows. Strong performances at Misano and Slovakia Ring were offset by technical issues and on-track incidents at Zolder and Nürburgring. Currently fourth in the standings, Newell's 114 points reflect his potential to climb higher if he can maintain consistency and avoid mechanical troubles. His determination to battle through adversities makes him a driver to watch in the latter half of the season.

5. Lukas Hahn - 105 points

Lukas Hahn has made a significant impact with 105 points from just two race weekends. His dominant performances, including three victories at Zolder and a win at the Nürburgring, have shown his capability to challenge the full-season drivers, if he were to run for an entire season in the championship.

6. Luis Recuenco - 84 points

The Spaniard has had a consistent season so far. Despite some on-track incidents and mechanical issues, the Spaniard has consistently scored points. His ability to stay in the mix and capitalise on opportunities will be key as he aims to better his position in the standings.

7. Clemens Hecker - 75 points

Clemens Hecker has had moments of brilliance and his podium finishes at Misano and Zolder showcase his potential. Currently with 75 points, Hecker will need to find more consistency to move up the standings. His performance in the second half will depend on his ability to maintain the pace and avoid the technical setbacks that have plagued him.

8. Luke Garrett - 45 points

Rookie Luke Garrett has faced a steep learning curve transitioning to the Goodyear FIA ETRC. Persistent steering issues have hampered his progress, yet his resilience and flashes of speed suggest he has the potential to climb the standings. If his team can solve the mechanical gremlins, expect Garrett to be a strong contender in the latter stages.

9. Bradley Smith - 17 points

Newcomer Bradley Smith has shown promising potential in his limited race-by-race outings. Consistent performances and his ability to adapt quickly have earned him valuable points. Continued participation and experience will be key for Smith to develop into a strong contender in the Chrome class.

Jonathan André - 11 points

Jonathan André has only made one race-by-race appearance so far this season at the Nürburgring. If his commitments in the French Championship permit, it would be great to see him take part in more Goodyear FIA ETRC races this season.
