Lukas beats Jochen in Hahn Goodyear FIA ETRC 1-2 at Most
Lukas Hahn beat father Jochen to Race 2 glory as the German family pairing celebrated in the Goodyear FIA European Truck Racing Championship at a warm and sunny Autodrom Most this afternoon.
Their third one-two in the series and the first time they’ve shared a podium since Race 3 at the Misano season opener in May, followed a typically action-packed contest in Czech Republic, which Lukas Hahn started from pole position on the partially-reversed grid.
“Pole position and a start-to-finish victory,” said IVECO-powered Lukas Hahn. “I’m really happy, the team made a really good job and we had the pace. I see in the start Adam [Lacko] was second and held the field behind him for a long time and for me it was good because I was able to gain a good gap and, in the end, it was enough to hold them. But I could see in the mirror they would come, and I was thinking ‘four laps, three laps, two laps…’, but it was really perfect in the end.
“Before you have a little bit of pressure but in the end you need to concentrate yourself and we concentrated, and we pushed. I wanted to make no mistakes and be safe. But I also know I cannot go too much slow. In the end it was enough and I’m really happy.
“Without the team you are nothing, but also the partners and the family, my wife, the kids, you need all of them together. Everyone made a good job and that’s why we could win the race. It’s a double victory and we are very happy with me and my father 1-2. It would be nice for us if it could be more often, but we are working on it.”
After driving his IVECO to second place from fourth on the grid, Jochen Hahn added: “It’s fantastic, we’re proud of the situation, we fight for it, and we do it together. When you make some book in the morning what you want from the day, it has this on it. Norbert Kiss had a better pace and on the last lap I must block him with all my experience, but we do it fair and in the result is first and second with Lukas first and me second, happy, job done for today but not tomorrow.”
Norbert Kiss, the Race 1 winner and provisional Goodyear FIA ETRC points leader, charged through from eighth place on the grid to complete the podium as Sascha Lenz profited from contact between Czech hero Adam Lacko and Germany’s René Reinert to take fourth.
“A good race, a good first couple of laps, nice fighting with Sascha and René side by side for a few turns,” Kiss said. “I arrived to third place behind Lukas and Jochen, who is one of the best and most experienced drivers out there and very difficult to overtake. I was faster but he didn’t make any big mistakes. I tried here and there but it didn’t work, I tried on the outside at Turn 1 on the final lap, but you cannot pass Jochen on the outside, that’s something I learned during the last couple of years. It was worth a try but, in the end, it was not there and I had to settle for the third position. But it was still a nice race and good points for us so a very good day.”
Former European champion Lacko was able to hold a Reinert at bay to secure fifth after a lengthy tussle with John Newell taking seventh and second in the Chrome division behind Lukas Hahn.
José Eduardo Rodrigues finished eighth as Steffi Halm battled back from the last place on the grid to overtake Mark Taylor for ninth starting the final lap.
Although he had to settle for 10th, defending champion Taylor secured valuable Chrome points in third ahead of category rivals Bradley Smith and Luke Garrett.
Antonio Albacete dropped out of contention following opening-lap contact to compound a challenging day in Czech Republic for the Spaniard, who began the event second in the championship chase.
Steffen Faas, Emma Mäkinen and Christian Ruppert rounded out the classified finishers, but there was frustration for Luis Recuenco, who was unable to start due to a mechanical issue.
The Czech Truck and NASCAR Prix continues tomorrow (Sunday) with Warm-up from 08:00, Qualifying 4-5-6 from 09:25 and Race 3 from 13:15. Race 4 follows from 16:15 with qualifying and both races live on YouTube.
