Kiss reigns in the Goodyear FIA ETRC rain with stunning comeback drive

Starting from eighth on the partially-reversed Race 4 grid, Kiss shrugged off the wet conditions for his 15^th win of the season as Sascha Lenz and Jochen Hahn completed the podium.

Behind the leading trio, Steffi Halm finished fourth having started from pole position with Antonio Albacete coming through strongly to finish fifth following a penultimate-lap pass on back-to-back Chrome category winner Steffen Faas.

“Good race and I enjoyed the wet for sure,” said Hungarian hero Kiss, who has moved a step closer to winning the Goodyear FIA ETRC title for a record-extending eighth time. “Conditions were improving so I could find a bit of extra grip, some special lines on the outside, good overtakes, I could brake very late and have some good exits and overtake some people. There were some tight calls as expected in a rain race like this. But I was very happy to catch Jochen and overtake him on the outside, it was very nice. To stay in front and win some races is good and another good job from Révész Racing. It’s satisfying when you can make these overtakes stick.”

Faas said: “It’s very nice, a good race and a good start. I tried to hold my position, but Norbi was very fast, Sascha also. But I’m happy to be first in my category twice, it’s perfect. We fix the truck now, go to the IAA Transportation [event in Hannover] then go directly to Le Mans.”

The tankpool24-Racing driver triumphed in the Chrome ranking ahead of title chasers Mark Taylor and John Newell. After a rare error dropped him out of the podium fight in Race 3, Newell bounced back in style by winning the Goodyear Wingfoot Award having topped the fan vote.

“With a little more traction I could have made a couple more moves but, all in all, a great weekend and I can’t complain,” said Newell. “Two wins yesterday was fantastic but we should have been a bit better today. Winning the Goodyear Wingfoot Award is phenomenal because it’s a prestigious award a lot of superstars have had.”

With heavy rain prior to the start, Race 4 began under yellow flag conditions before the action proper began on lap two.

Six-time European champiion Hahn, who missed Sunday morning qualifying while his team rushed to complete an engine change, wasted no time by passing fellow IVECO-powered driver Halm on the inside at Eerste Linkse, the first corner.

Having run eighth until the completion of lap two, Kiss began to make his move, passing first Albacete and then Rodrigues and then Lenz and René Reinert in quick succession before lap three was out.

Faas was next to fall on lap four with third-placed Halm despatched on the exit of Sterrenwacht on lap five before Kiss overtook Hahn exiting Kanaal-Bocht on lap eight for a lead he wouldn’t lose.

Lenz was another driver to make significant progress, passing José Eduardo Rodrigues exiting Eerste Linkse on lap three and then getting ahead of Reinert on the entry to the same corner on the following tour. He moved into third at Halm’s expense at Bolderberg Bocht on lap five and then demoted Hahn for second on lap nine. But with Kiss more than five seconds up the road, Lenz settled for second to add to his Race 2 victory on Saturday.

Rodrigues finished eighth behind Reinert with Taylor and Newell ninth and 10^th respectively. Jonathan André, a double Chrome podium finisher, took 11^th with Luke Garrett 12^th after a steering component failure forced him out of Race 3. Stefan Kursch and Luis Recuenco completed the finishers but technical issues rendered Clemens Hecker a non-starter in both races today.
