Hahn makes flying start to Goodyear FIA ETRC season showdown

Jochen Hahn emerged from Free Practice 1 as the driver to beat in the Goodyear FIA European Truck Racing Championship season finale after he went fastest during the opening 30-minute session at Circuito de Madrid Jarama – RACE.

The IVECO-powered driver posted a best time of 2m08.534s in wet conditions, ending up 0.111s faster than home hero Antonio Albacete around the 3.850-kilometre track, which is hosting the 39th Grand Prix de España FIA Europeo de Camiones this weekend.

Recently-crowned eight-time European champion Norbert Kiss was third fastest, 0.408s down on first place with Sascha Lenz and Steffi Halm completing the top five.

Clemens Hecker impressed with the fastest time in the Chrome category, but there was drama for championship leader John Newell, who went off into the Turn 3 gravel trap after 13 minutes. With Newell’s MAN stuck, the session was red flagged to enable volunteer marshals and recovery crews to clear the obstruction before the session continued.

Mark Taylor, who starts the Jarama weekend 13 points behind Newell in the Chrome title battle, was seventh quickest ahead of Steffen Faas, Goodyear FIA ETRC Young Driver champion José Eduardo Rodrigues and Spanish driver Luis Recuenco.

Behind 11th-placed Newell, Jonathan André was 12th, Bradley Smith 13th, Lukas Hahn 14th and René Reinert 15th as Luke Garrett and Goodyear FIA ETRC returnee Mika Mäkinen rounding out the contenders.

Free Practice 2 is next from 11:15 local time ahead of Qualifying 1-2-3 from 13:25.
