Race 3 flash report: Father beats son in Hahn family Goodyear FIA ETRC 1-2
Jochen Hahn beat his son Lukas to victory in Race 3 at Misano as Norbert Kiss, the seven-time winner of the Goodyear FIA European Truck Racing Championship, could only finish sixth after early contact left his MAN with right-rear tyre damage.
Hahn Sr had started on the front row of the grid alongside pole-sitter Kiss, a double winner on Saturday, and followed his Hungarian rival through the opening corners before contact with Kiss at Turn 5 allowed the six-time FIA ETRC champion to take a lead he wouldn’t lose.
With Kiss in trouble, Albacete took second before he dropped behind Lukas Hahn on lap three after he ran wide at Turn 9 with reported brake issues.
But there were no such problems for Jochen Hahn, who pulled clear to win ahead of his son Lukas by 2.562s as Albacete completed the podium. It was the first Jochen and Lukas Hahn Goodyear FIA ETRC 1-2 since the father and son finished first and second at Circuit Zolder three years ago.
Jochen Hahn said: “He [Kiss] made just one mistake, and I think, ‘now it's the time and I do it’. It was perfect and, with one word, I was proud to be on the podium with Lukas. The point is you can only beat Norbert in the first corners and he made a mistake and I go and overtake, that’s it. After this I had it under control.”
Sascha Lenz followed Albacete home in fourth with Steffi Halm fifth and Kiss sixth. René Reinert finished seventh while eighth place for Bradley Smirth secured the Briton pole position for the partially-reversed Race 4 grid.
José Eduardo Rodrigues pressured Smith during the closing stages but was forced to settle for ninth as John Newell completed the top 10 and the Chrome top three behind winner Lukas Hahn and runner-up Smith.
Steffen Faas and Luke Garrett hit back from their DNFs in Race 2 on Saturday to finish 11th and 13threspectively as Jonathan André took 12th. Stefan Kursch was 14th, while Mark Taylor limped home in 15th due to an engine issue.
Clemens Hecker was a non-starter but is expected to line up for the final race of the Misano weekend, which gets under way at 15:50 local time live on YouTube.
Following Race 3, Albacete, Lukas Hahn and Norbert Kiss were confirmed as the nominees for the Goodyear Wingfoot Award with the fan vote available now via Instagram. The winner will be announced in the closing stages of Race 4 with the inaugural FIA ETRC Goodyear Wingfoot Award presented on the final podium.
