Steffi Halm stays calm for Most Goodyear FIA ETRC victory

Steffi Halm put a challenging start to her Autodrom Most weekend to one side as she fended off multiple champion Norbert Kiss for Goodyear FIA European Truck Racing Championship glory in Race 4 – by 0.448s.

Halm started Saturday’s action on the backfoot after a troubled qualifying on Friday. But she hit back on Sunday to win the weekend’s final race from the partially-reversed grid, despite intense pressure from Kiss during the closing stages, after Kiss had battled through from eighth place on the starting grid.

German driver Halm said: “I was very happy all the laps I saw Adam [Lacko] behind me but then there was the point when there was a red truck behind me and I said, ‘oh no’. I tried to stay focused, I tried to make no mistake to give him no chance to go somewhere and it worked. Norbi was very fair, he touched me not once and it was great.”

By adding second place to his victories in Race 1 and Race 3 and third place in Race 2, Kiss leaves Czech Republic with a full set of trophies – gold, silver and bronze.

“It was a good race, I could overtake Antonio [Albacete] at the start and Jochen [Hahn] on the outside [at Turn 1], which were nice moves I think and I was very happy with those,” said Kiss, the Goodyear FIA ETRC points leader. “Then I got Sascha [Lenz] and Adam was the last one for P2. In the last laps I catch Steffi but she drove well with no mistakes.”

While IVECO-powered Halm celebrated her first victory of the season, home hero Adam Lacko achieved his pre-event aim of a podium finish in third overall ahead of Sascha Lenz and Jochen Han, who took the chequered flag in close proximity.

Defending Chrome champion Mark Taylor followed up his category win in Race 3 by winning again in Race 4 ahead of John Newell, who recovered from a run through the T2 gravel trap on the opening lap.

“We had a good, clean start, we spread out then all of a sudden bunched back up together so it was a bit cat and mouse,” said Taylor. “But the track has come back good, everyone’s happy, the sponsor and the team. A good weekend.”

José Eduardo Rodrigues finished eighth as the weekend’s top Young Driver, while Lukas Hahn won the Goodyear Wingfoot Award by one fan vote over Newell in ninth.

René Reinert completed the top 10 with Steffen Faas building on his Race 3 form in 11^th, one place ahead of Luke Garrett. Bradley Smith, Emma Mäkinen and Christian Ruppert completed the finishers, but Spaniards Antonio Albacete and Luis Recuenco were less fortunate as they both stopped with mechanical issues.
